Antecrypt⚡
by PUNKCAKE Délicieux 🥞
Price (US): $6
Included In: Bundle for Ukraine, Indie Bundle for Abortion Funds
Genre: Shooter, Action
Pitch: An old-school, one-hit-kill, wave-based, twin-stick shooter with a few twists.
My expectations: The phrase "single-stick shooter" is catching my eye. Twin-stick is generally the preferred control method for Robotron 2084-derived shooters. I look forward to seeing why this game thinks it knows better.
Review:
The second Antecrypt⚡ began, I got it.
Tumblr media
It’s not a “single-stick shooter.” It’s a twin-stick shooter. You have one stick to move the character, and the other stick is in the uncertain grip of a lazy, disinterested drunk.
Tumblr media
Oh, and the battery-powered gun can only fire for a few seconds between charges. Naturally, the charging station is wherever the drunk thinks it should be. On paper, this sounds like a funny experiment or a good-natured prank. Maybe it is. It’s also a genuinely great arcade game.
Tumblr media
The “right-stick” moves slowly enough to allow for some aiming and some strategy, while its random path demands constant attention and improvisation. Taking out a full group of enemies in one, sustained shot feels incredible. Being separated from the recharging zone with an empty gun feels impossible. Weaving a parth to stay alive and miraculously get back in the game is triumphant.
Tumblr media
Every enemy type is perfectly designed for the weird control scheme, with simple, predictable movement patterns that suddenly seem a lot more threatening in great numbers or in combination with other monsters. Each level unlocks a stat boost or consumable bonus, lending a meaningful sense of progression. Try it. You’ll get it.
+ Sounds like a confusing joke on paper, but get a controller in your hands, and you'll understand it immediately. + A perfect mix of familiarity and originality. + Great aesthetic. Lots of audio/visual feedback that makes every action seem powerful and exciting. Even with the whole screen shaking and flashing, everything is easy to follow. + Progression! Levels are designed, not procedurally generated! Boss fights! Meaningful rewards!
– What? No music? – Big difficulty spike at Level 9. It forced me to get better, and I've now made it through the first 13 levels...which means there are 27 more to go. I'm already on the easiest difficulty. I'm scared I'll hit my ceiling well before the end. – Random aiming means you can do everything right and still get struck down by bad luck. – Fullscreen is a little stretched and blurred. Windowed cuts off the top of the screen. Maybe this is specifically a problem with my computer?
🧡🧡🧡🧡🤍 Bottom Line: A novel twist on a proven genre. A retro arcade game for the modern player. Antecrypt⚡'s brutal difficulty will be a turn-off for some, but I invite anybody who's open to something that's a little different to take a crack at the early levels.

Wait omg..... Jessica Cruz probably did rifle... my specialized sports knowledge coming in CLUTCH
Okay so I barely practiced and made it to regionals like once so im NOT the expert here but uh headcanoning that Jess did air rifle when she was a teen. Like idk if it would be as part of a team like with a high school (what I'm familiar with) vs like an individual thing vs like a travel/competitive team (it depends on the sitch in her area growing up) but she definitely went to some national matches (probably including JOs/JO quals like i think she was GOOD). I think she probably would have quit competitively following a bad shot at nationals (relatable) along with anxiety about competition (ALSO relatable) but still kept up with shooting casually for fun and relaxation and to hang out with friends etc.
She definitely would have shot smallbore competitively too but I never did that bc I was lazy so idk to much abt it competitively
#and by bad shot i mean a 0#it hurts me to even think abt doing that during a match actually esp at fucking JOs#a girl on my team did that and im sure it was devastating (we never let her live it down after too) but like dang. i feel that pain#im just saying she would vibe sooooooo hard with rifle. like canonically they just said she did it but im talking air in particular#also in the panel they said six which first off. humphries bro thats TOO young ik youre trying to be impressive but youre talking abt rifle#here. if someones let their kid have a gun at 6 theres actually smth wrong with them. and not even a bb or smth wtf#ANYWAYS you guys haveeeee to understand this. jess would go so hard for rifle she would fit right in w every competitive shooter ive ever#met istg-#she would be out there on the porch 35° weather in full gear mid match crying w the rest of us it would be great#wait wait shoutout to the time i had to get smth from my car and there were like 4 ppl out there crying during the middle of standing#like i literally FEEL THAT SO HARD (weve all been there) but also like... awkwarddddddd#4 is an unusually large amount though. normally its like 2 ppl at a time first relay. with more 1st relay ppl crying after than during#gosh rifle omg this is making me miss it#<<<<freshman/sophomore me would kill me for saying this btw. i HATED practicing so bad then omg#OH and Jess would be a kneeling girlie. fave position. why ? bc i said so shut up#no but bc its my favorite position (yes i know its the worst okay. im aware of all the reasons kneelings sucks and why everyone hates it.#but you know what? kneeling hates everyone equally and i respect that) no but uh yeah ✌️✌️✌️✌️#top 10 posts that are 80% jargon and only i care about 😘#anyways this is canon to me now actually#like idc what you say she was down in the trenches (the range) w the rest of us#also ik she almost certainly would have shot paper but in my mind she practices mainly w electronic bc thats what i used (even if its super#uncommon and is only used at the nice ranges) if she was super competitive she would probably have driven to shoot electronic. lets just say#there was a paper nearby and an electronic scoring range a bit farther or smth#anyways yeah#WAIT OMG SHE DEFINITELY MET HER FRIENDS FROM HER BACKSTORY THROUGH RIFLE#and the dating drama too omg rifle drama was INSANE. like i was almost always out of the loop bc i never practiced and didnt have snapchat#but like the drama was INSANE. fucking wild. at least to my nerdy ass self. so her relationship drama makes total sense now okay babe fr#jessica cruz#blah

Ambidangerous
by pabischoff
Price (US): $2
Included In: Bundle for Racial Equality and Justice
Genre: Action
Pitch: A fast-paced top-down shooter in which one player controls two characters.
My expectations: The last game I played in which the left and right control sticks independently moved two characters stunk, but I've enjoyed games that are built around the maddening impossibility of that task. Ambidangerous looks like it embraces the absurd, and I look forward to it kicking me in the brain with both feet.
Review:
Tumblr media
If you hold two controllers at once, any cooperative game can be played alone.
Tumblr media
And if that’s not blunt enough: This game’s key selling point is bad.
Tumblr media
I pointed to Animal Crossing: Sweet Day from Nintendo Land as an example of two sticks / two characters / one player done well. Sweet Day is a small party game with asynchronous multiplayer. Up to four players, all on the same team, control a single character each. The other team is a single player controlling two characters, yet both teams are easily matched. Everything—movement speed, visibility, the player’s objective—is tuned to make one player with ridiculous controls equal to four players with traditional controls.
Tumblr media
Ambidangerous is just an unremarkable, co-op, top-down shooter, with an option to control two characters on one controller. The threat is too fast; the weapon range, too short; the targeting, too flaky. The rare times I could line up both characters and simultaneously unload on an enemy were fine, but I usually hid one in a corner, or I died.
Tumblr media
True single-player or multiplayer is infinitely better, but it’s still an unremarkable top-down shooter. It’s playable. It would be better with twin-stick aiming, though.
+ Using anything other than the default machine gun is asking for trouble in most cases, but everything has some purpose. Finding the right tool for the job can be satisfying. + Single-player is better than faux-multiplayer. (And I assume true multiplayer is best of all.) + Each of the four areas is distinct. + Huge bosses with multiple phases.
– Faux-multiplayer doesn't fit the game at all. Enemies, environments, weapons, and movement speed aren't design for it. – Single-player ain't great. – Audio/visual presentation ain't great. – All of the weapons are terrible. Lousy shooting all around.
🧡🧡🤍🤍🤍 Bottom Line: Procedurally generated twin-sticks shooters were the hottest thing in the world for a few years. The developer says Ambidangerous was, "Inspired by games like The Binding of Isaac, Hotline Miami, and the original Legend of Zelda." Play any of those. Play some Robotron: 2084 or Smash TV. Not this.
